Golf in South Wales

Wales has golf courses where you can play beneath the shadow of a castle, parkland courses in breath-taking mountain settings, cliff top tees and greens and inspirational links courses.  There are some 200 golf courses in Wales - enough to feed any golf appetite.

With over 750 miles of coastline, Wales has a wealth of fantastic Links courses and, with 43 Blue Flag beaches running alongside them, you're sure to find plenty to do after you have put in your practice on the snooker table.

Some of the courses we recommend are shown below:

The Ashburnham golf course is only 5 miles from the Terry Griffiths Matchroom. This demanding seaside venue, where the great Welshman and winning Ryder Cup Captain, Dai Rees won the PGA title in 1959, has long been regarded as one of the best links courses in Britain. Indeed it won that rating from no less authority than the immortal Harry Vardon. He twice played the course, enjoying himself immensely and was compelled to record soon afterwards that "The course I like best in Wales is Ashburnham" The course that you tackle today is basically the layout which the redoubtable J. H. Taylor designed in 1910 after paying a visit to suggest further alterations to a course then 14 years old. He returned three years later to inspect progress and suggest further alterations. The results pleased the great man, who commented with great pride: "It stands comparison with many of the best seaside courses in the country". Find out more by calling +44 1554 832466.

Machynys Peninsula Golf & Country Club is only a two minute drive from our Snooker Academy and incorporates the first Nicklaus-designed golf course in Wales. It boasts first class golf, spa and leisure facilities. Teeing off from the first hole couldn't be more picturesque, with stunning views over Carmarthen Bay and the Gower Peninsula. An exciting and versatile course, Machynys Peninsula has been designed to challenge the best players in championship conditions - and yet still be enjoyable for the higher handicapper (utilising up to five tees per hole).

Located 3 miles from Carmarthen town centre (approx. 18 miles from the Matchroom), Carmarthen Golf Club is set in the stunning Carmarthenshire countryside. The course is carved through the Gwili Valley and offers a parkland layout that will challenge you and excite you at the same time. The view across 4 of the old Welsh counties can only be described as breath taking.

Carmarthen offers a friendly and welcoming experience for all its visitors and members, the clubhouse has an upstairs gallery style view of the course and countryside, with the restaurant offering traditional Welsh cuisine. The club is always striving to improve and the recent addition of a floodlit driving range has made Carmarthen Golf Club the envy of many with its superb practice and coaching facilities, further enhanced by the recent appointment of our new Director of Golf - Darren Griffiths (Welsh PGA Professional of the year 2008).
