Coaching Tips 3

Here at Terry Griffiths Snooker we would like to share some snooker tips and trade secrets that may help you to improve your game. Terry Griffiths has picked up many helpful snooker tips over the years, as well as picking up 'pearls of wisdom' from other great players and knowledgable coaches along the way. On this page he will share some of these 'nuggets' with you.

Every month we hope to have a new 'Tip of the Month' for you to try out on the snooker table. Feel free to share the contents of this coaching page with your friends - or is your will to win going to encourage you to keep the contents of this page a secret?

This month's coaching tip:

"Take some time to adopt a routine that you can use for EVERY shot. Consistency is one of the things I get asked most about as a coach. The way to improve consistency is to have a short list of steps you follow, without fail, for every shot. One aspect of a routine you may consider is a 'Pre-shot Routine' (PSR). This is a simple process that you can follow before you drop to form your cue action. I suggest your PSR should include the following as a minimum:"

"1. Assess - take the time to look at ALL the options available;"

"2. Decide - A clear decision should be taken regarding the shot you are about to play - BEFORE you drop to form your action;"

"3. Visualise - Imagine the successful completion of the shot you have decided to play. Think about the final position of the object ball (normally, but not always, in the pocket) and the ideal path and final resting position for the cue ball."

Using these three steps before EVERY shot takes a great deal of discipline, but will give you a good platform on which to build your cue action. Using routines like this effectively will serve to improve your rates of success.
